Project Updates:

  • The Stroke and CPAP Outcome Study 3 (SCOUTS3) is a NHLBI-funded study which utilizes a user-centered design to adapt and refine a multicomponent behavioral intervention to improve CPAP adherence for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea with the engagement and input of stroke survivors.

  • Within an ongoing multicenter randomized controlled trial at University of Washington (Seattle, WA) and Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center (Los Angeles, CA), we have now begun testing the efficacy of the optimized intervention, initiated during inpatient stroke rehabilitation, on CPAP use over the course of 3 months.

  • The adherence intervention includes: 1) CPAP technical support, 2) motivational enhancement therapy, and 3) self-monitoring using mobile health technologies with automated support.

  • If successful, the study will provide researchers a much-needed intervention to realize the full benefits of CPAP after stroke.
